Exhibit: Sports Teams
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P101: Have a good attendance record at school, work, and/or extracurricular activities
P103: Meet school and/or work deadlines
Having a good attendance record at work or extracurricular activities is a very important character trait to have in life. All throughout high school basketball and golf, I have never missed one practice nor game. I know what the consequences are for missing and I know it’s not worth it. I think if you miss a day at work or in an activity then that’s another day someone else is getting ahead and better than you are.
Meeting school and work deadlines is a must have responsible trait to have in becoming a successful person in life. In order to play either basketball or golf for a school you need to have good grades and with good grades comes meeting deadlines. I’ve never been ineligible for a single game and that’s because I turned all of my assignments in on time and kept my grades high enough so I could compete in every game or match that I was capable of.
Having a good attendance record and meeting deadlines will help me in my future career in many ways. If I’m not on time and meeting my deadlines than it can make me lose clients. If I showed up late and unprepared for a lesson my clients would be upset and more than likely wouldn’t want to come back for another lesson. It would bring my reputation down and I wouldn’t be as successful sports instructor that I want to be. Being known for not being on time and unprepared is a very bad name to have as a sports instructor. If I was on time and prepared my clients would be happy and I’ll have a better chance at getting their business again.
In my personal life being on time and meeting deadlines is a must. When I have a family getting my kids to their games and to their activities is a very important responsibility to have. When you’re a parent little kids look up to you and you’re setting an example for them at all times. Not making your deadlines can cause you your house and your car and can cause you a lot of debt making life a struggle. If I’m on time and meeting my deadlines my life won’t be a struggle all the time and I won’t be worrying about my possessions as much. Other people will see that and in turn I’ll have more friends because I’ll be friendlier and a much happier person.

Exhibit: Uncles House
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P102: Demonstrate safety and self-control requiring minimum direction and supervisio
P108: Go beyond what is asked to improve personal, educational, or work-related projects
During the summer I worked with my uncle building his new house on the 15 acres of land that he bought. There have been many days where he has been at work and I’ve started building the foundation and putting the walls up. I’ll admit there has been a couple times where I wasn’t sure what was next to do and I’ve had to leave, but 90% of time I knew what to do. I used power tools for hours on end to get what I needed to do done.
While I worked at my uncles building his house there were periods where we couldn’t work because the cement was being poured or the plumbers had to do their work inside the house. So while my uncle wasn’t there I went out and weed waked around the house and around the backhoe to clean up the yard a little bit. My uncle was very pleased with my work.
In my future career demonstrating safety and self-control is a must need in my career as a sports instructor. If I don’t use the proper safety techniques I can really injure one of my clients and could face possible fines. If I want to be a successful sports instructor then going beyond what I need to do is something I’ll have to do. I’ll have to make sure all of my equipment is up to date and in a safe position for me to teach my students.
Going beyond what is asked will help me in my personal life because it will make me a better person as a whole. Places will look nicer that I come to because I’ll do the little things to help improve the place. Demonstrating safety and self-control will help me in my personal life because not only will I be safer and more cautious of my surroundings but I’ll be setting a good example for the people around me. I’ll be a happier person as a whole because I know that I’m doing the right thing.

Exhibit: Uncles House
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P104 - Find new and creative ways to solve problems
P106 – Use charts, graphs, or graphic organizers to demonstrate organizational skills.
When building a house it’s very easy to misplace tools. Carrying tools such as a ruler, pencil and combination square a very easy thing to misplace. After a while losing your tools gets very frustrating, especially when you’re working in a high up area and it consists of you climbing up and down the latter or scaffolding each and every time. So instead of having just one square to do all of your measurements with I simply cut an old scrap piece of wood at a ninety degree angle and would leave it near the area I was working which saved me a lot of time instead of climbing up and down to get what I need.
There is a lot of figuring when working on the interior of a new house. Always knowing exactly where you can and can’t drill is a very important responsibility to have. All throughout the house there are wires for the lights, outlets, fans, telephone, cable, water, and heat going through the truces of the house behind the drywall that you wouldn’t know was there unless you had a well graphed out map telling you exactly where the wires are and what they run too. Before drilling into the wall for put up the interior siding you always have to look at the graph to make sure you’re not drilling into a wire, or else that could ruin a lot of well planned out work. Not only that but the wires could be hot and drilling into a hot wire can be very fatal.
Finding new and creative ways to solve problems will help me in my future career because some of my techniques when teaching my clients may not work for them or may make them feel very uncomfortable. So having different ways to solve their problems will make me a more flexible and understanding sports instructor. They have new technology where they can track your club head speed or your golf ball and the trajectory of the ball you hit. Being able to use a graph and chart will help me keep track of their shots on the computer and will allow me to be able to show them an average of how their ball trajectory is, which could be the solution to their problem in their golf swing.
Using graphic organizers and being able to find new ways to solve problems show that you’re a responsible person and that you can think outside of the box when a problem comes up. Graphic organizers are a very simple way to stay on top of your schedule and to never be late. Being able to solve problems in a creative way is a big help to anyone in any situation. If something is broken and you’re able to think of another way to solve the problem can result in a lot of time in money on whatever it is that you’re doing.

Exhibit: Weight Training
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P105: Use timelines, document steps you take, and evaluate your results in a problem solving process
P109: Recognize a need or opportunity and take appropriate action
During high school our weight training class has taught me a lot about who I am and what my work ethic is. There is a lot of recording and evaluating that takes place in my weight training class. After each exercise you’re suppose to record the weight that you used and how many sets and reps you did. That helps you remember the weight used on the previous set for the next time you do that exercise. In theory, adding more weight after each set is the best way to make maximum gains.
Many days in weight training our teacher will give us constant movement days. That is where you can do whatever you want as long as you are doing something active. Other days our teacher wants us all in the weight room lifting and that tends to get very crowded. Unfortunately that opens up the opportunity for someone to use the same weight lifting machine that you want to use. So when our teacher gratefully gives us constant movement days I recognize that opportunity and take appropriate action in using the weight room while everybody else is out doing whatever they want.
In my future career as a sports instructor I’ll have technology that’ll allow me to track their golf ball flight and trajectory. I will then have to record that information and use charts to show them what there problem is so we can get them making progress as soon as possible. When a client wants a lesson from me I’ll have to record the time and place they would like their lesson to be taught and make sure I’m their on time and ready to start before they are.
There will come many times in my life where I don’t know something right off the top of my head and will need somewhere to go to get that information. Being able to keep track of my documents and important paperwork is something I am very good at and will need to be able to do in my personal life. If I purchase a good at a grocery store or a clothing store and it’s expired or not the right size I’ll have to make sure I know exactly where to look so I can return what I need. After each purchase or being handed an important document that I know I’ll need, I’ll have to recognize that opportunity and take the appropriate action needed.

Exhibit: Babysitting
Benchmark: Personal Management
Skills: P107: Be self-motivated in taking responsibility
P110: Accept new and changing responsibilities
Since I was about ten years old I’ve babysat. I have two little sisters that I would have to watch for my parents on occasion. One of my siblings is disabled and that means giving her a little more special attention and care then a someone that isn’t disabled. I have always been very responsible and trustworthy.
Having a disabled sibling can be tough at times considering that she can’t tell you what she wants or needs. I’ve had to adapt to that and accept that she needs extra care. That demands me to be self-motivated in taking responsibility and not to allow her to do anything she’s not suppose to do. That doesn’t leave me with the option to screw up and just do what I want to do, I have to have my full attention on my siblings at all times under all circumstances.
Being self-motivated in taking responsibility will help me in my future career because in order for me to get my name out there for people to see that I’m available for lessons I need to advertise and promote what I have to offer. The only way for me to succeed in being a sport instructor is if I’m self-motivated in everything that I do. From giving a lesson to telling people how I can lower their golf game by strokes.
In my personal life accepting new responsibilities and being self-motivated to complete them will have to be a second nature for me. Those are two characteristics a person needs to have in order to be a good successful person. If my child gets sick or my car breaks down ill have to be able to accept the problem and have the self-motivation to fix it. If not then I will have a tough time getting through life without any extra special support.
